The german association Freiheit für die Westsahara e.V. (‘Freedom for Western Sahara’) was founded end of 2012 in the city of Bremen in order to considerably raise the attention in Germany on the Western Sahara conflict. It claims from German foreign policy to push for
a solution of the conflict on basis of the human rights within the EU and on international level, allowing the last African colony to achieve its right for self-determination.
Personalities from politics, science and NGOs are part of the association’s Advisory Board. It also includes one member each of the parties CDU, SPD and Die Linke in German Bundestag (national parliament). The patron of the Advisory Board is Christian Weber, President of Bremische Bürgerschaft (parliament of the federal state). The first big activity took place in 2013, organizing a programme for the Sahrawi activist Aminatou Haidar, who was honored with the Solidarity Price of the Senate of Bremen. In 2014 the association administered a first international expert meeting on the Western Sahara conflict in Germany.
